Villains (II)
You know what villains I hate? Villains who lose because of utter incompetence. Not just supreme villain arrogance (which is very old in and of itself). But simple, outright, full-on, incompetence.
The most glaring example is from the anime Noir. Now I never watched the whole series and after this particular scene I don't think I want to. The main characters in the series are a pair of assassins. One gets captured and she is in the middle of something in the realm of three dozen bad guys as they take her down the path off of the mountain. The second waits for them at the base of the mountain. All of the bad guys simply open up with their guns and none of them can hit her even though she is standing in the middle of the path with no cover! None of them. Even worse, instead of simply putting a bullet into the one in their midst, they ignore her and let her get a weapon to join in the killing of them.
...
Yeah...that scene totally turned me off of that show.

Hm. I loved
Noir, m'self, because it's a good story, told well. I assume you hated
Star Wars because the Stormtroopers couldn't hit the heroes?

Wonderduck, the example in Noir was carried to extremes. Overall, I found Star Wars to be...okay. Up until that point, I thought Noir was okay...nothing spectacular. But that carried poor accuracy to a new level. Usually, at least the main characters are running...or something (still really sad but not quite so much).
Combine fairly good, that scene, and the price of anime, I figured the money would go elsewhere.

...And, as always, I am surprised to see signs that someone else was here...much less someone whose blog I regularly check out.

A bit late to this conversation (your blog in general it seems), but the reason for bad guy innacuracy is onvious. If the bad guys could shoot as well as they are supposed to, based on background and training given (i.e. stormtroopers are supposed to be expert shots, and many bad guy minions are like SF types), then heroes would die constantly.
One marksman providing cover for a group of bad guys who use cover and concealment, and flank their target, and the hero is no more. That's how real life would work. But it's just more entertaining to see the heroes strive and ultimately win against overwhelming odds.

Villains
The other day, I read a blog post from a friend of mine about villains and how they don't seem to be really evil anymore. To an extent, I agree with him, but I honestly don't know if it is necassary. To try and figure out what I like in a villain I decided to examine three of my favorites (ended up being four) to try and figure it out. I wasn't too successful because I had a hard time defining exactly what about each villain I liked.

Objects in Space is one of my favorite episodes of Firefly because of Jubal Early.
But I don't know...I just don't get the evil vibe from villains anymore. Except last night I was watching Fallen and I found their version of Satan to give off really evil vibes.
But I don't know...I just don't get that vibe as much as I'd like to.

Slytherin House
I finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows yesterday afternoon. And I was going to write a post last night, but got sidetracked when I got involved with a conversation over IM with a friend who had also read the series. During that he mentioned that he didn't like the epilogue. I agreed with him, but there was one thing I did like about the epilogue.
(Spoilers follow)
